Block of Southeast was developed by Clear Channel Communications (now known as iHeartMedia) from 1993 to 2000 with an initial investment of $30 million.[1] The mall was originally named Blockbuster Central,[2] but it changed its name to Blockbuster Square because another chain wanted it for their own location.[3] The mall has since become one of South Bend's most popular landmarks.[4][5][6][7]

The Block is currently owned by CORE Real Estate Investment Trust which purchased it from American Real Estate Partners LLC.[8]

The retail center was founded in 1965 by Jack and Mary Boermans, who opened a drug store at its location for a short period before opening a bakery called "The Grand Central Bakery". They later sold the bakery to their customers and opened their own restaurant where they offered some of their traditional dishes from the bakery such as cinnamon rolls, banana cream pie and apple dumplings. In 1971 they opened another restaurant named "The Bridge Cafe", which specialized in breakfast. It was followed by several other restaurants including a steak house called "Schnauzers" (which was later closed due to financial problems). In 1996 Block of Southeast opened its second location at 1035 Notre Dame Avenue South in Granger Township.
